View Full Version : Bug? Phase filter settings "By Host View"

I guess this is a bug, but I thought I'd post here first before reporting.
I have a view that is set to New Construction and has a custom Phase Filter set. I linked in a Structural rvt Project and it is set to By Host View. For some reason, it is not picking the host view Phase Filter. Instead it reports as "None" and this is a major setback as I'll have to manage every view's linked file individually instead of by Host View. See attached.

Check with support. Does the view look correct or not? The phase filter value in the dialog probably doesn't update to show the host view's phase filter unless the top level control for override is activated.

The Architectural objects are correct since they are located in the host project. The structural objects are not because they are within a linked file, whose Phase Filter in each view is coming in as "<By Host View> (None)", but that doesn't make sense because the host view's Phase Filter is set to something, as shown on the left of the attachment (this is the setting of one 3d view). Each view's Revit Links tab should be picking up all my host view's settings, including Phase Filters.

I have a SR going on this. I tried replicating the problem with some test files and it seemed I could reproduce it, but then all of a sudden they started working correctly :banghead: . The project file is still messed up, although if I use the Phase Filter "Show All", it show correctly in the link's By Host View settings. So something must be wrong internally in the file. Auditing has not helped, so we'll see. I'll update the post once I hear back.

Ok, traced back what the "problem" is.
The Phase Filters need to be the same in BOTH the linked file/s and host. I didn't realize that when setting "Custom", the list of Phases and Phase Filters comes from the Linked file and not the Host file. If the host view Phase Filter does not exist in the linked file, when a view is set to by Host View, the Phase Filter defaults to (none). This is undesireable behavior, but with current funcitonality, Revit doesn't know what to do. I think as a minimum, it should issue a warning.
Similarly, if the phase that the host view is set to does not exist in the linked file, it defaults to what seems like the latest phase in the linked file, which is incorrect. It should default to what the host view's Phase is, but since it doesn't exist in the linked file, it has to default to some other phase.
I really feel that the current functionality is somewhat flawed and I think an enhancement is in order as it doesn't seem very intuituve. If you set something to By Host View, it seems plain English to me that it's going to take those settings, whether available in the Linked project or not.

Although the last post regarding this issue is over 3 years old, I've just stumbled upon the same problem. I'm assuming it's therefore still unresolved?
Currently, it seems that if a custom phase filter is set up, it has no effect upon a linked file, unless the linked file also contains a phase filter with exactly the same name.....and if overrides are required in the phase filter, the linked file phase filter also has to be set to use overrides.
If anyone has any advice to the contrary, it would be very much appreciated!
Thanks.

Nothing has changed really. You still have to use Transfer Project Standards to coordinate phase filters between linked files.

can anyone confirm if it's solved in 2012?

yes, it's not out yet, but some of you guys already tested Beta version, maybe i should check David Light's latest blog again.

The Released version might differ from the final beta tests so I would never rely on that info. I believe the topic of this thread has not been resolved yet.
