I am creating a roof for a residence in Design Dev. I would like to use revit standard tools at this stage. I know I am missing something I want to specify the overhang while I am creating it. Are there several methods? I am looking in the element properties after a roof is already created. also am creating it by lines and see no option. I do see it (overhang) when I create a roof by selecting walls. Though when I change it to 24" I am still not seeing an overhang when I actually create the roof. Quite sure it is an operator error.

My understanding is the only way to adjust roof overhang is in roof sketch mode.

Typing in an overhang in sketch mode will only work if you made the roof by picking the walls. If you made it with lines then you would need to offset the line a different distance.

For the sake of some completeness, you get a different effect with the height of the overhang when using lines as opposed the walls.

once you type in the 24" overhang you need, hover your mouse pointer over a wall. it should show up. sometimes, you have to move it slightly because it might not know which side of the wall that you mean.

I also make sure when doing the roof by footprint to make sure extend to core is selected. Makes me a little mad when I don't have the option of having this check box stay active all the time.

richelleharp,

What you're running into is a common misconception with the Roof tool - but the advice given is pretty sound. I would highly suggest using the "Pick Walls" option while creating the roofs, as this 'ties' the roof to the wall elements. As whittendesigns says, make sure the 'extend to core' box is checked. You can see the effect of this if you have a section view open at the same time to see the difference. You can certainly use the Lines, however you'll need to account for dimension differences in the overhang and make sure you've checked the Offset. I use it sparingly.

Also, if you haven't already, look into the Roof section under the Help file - this is pretty well written and covers a few different roof types and has good explanation as to what is going on.
