I am stepping out of my shell and using a few blocks in my drawings lately.
How would I go about replacing an existing block?
Lets say I have an occurance of 12 pictorals and I want them
replaced with a completely different block/pictoral.

If the block is not dynamic, the simply re-inserting the block from its master file and choosing "overwrite existing files" (or something to that effect) when asked would work fine for you.
If the block is Dynamic, however, the only solution is to delete all instances of the block, purge and re-insert the block once again. Either that or to rename the existing instance and re-insert the block from its master file.

Use the ._INSERT command.
See example below
Command: .-INSERT
Enter block name or [?] <SOLAR>: SOLAR=K:\BLOCKS\SOLAR
Block "SOLAR" already exists. Redefine it? [Yes/No] <N>: _Y
Duplicate definition of block FOOTPAD ignored.
Block "SOLAR" redefined
Specify insertion point or
[Basepoint/Scale/X/Y/Z/Rotate/PScale/PX/PY/PZ/PRotate]:
Enter X scale factor, specify opposite corner, or [Corner/XYZ] <1>:
Enter Y scale factor <use X scale factor>:
Specify rotation angle <0>:

You can use Express Tools to replace blocks with a different block. If I remember correctly, the command is under E.T.->Blocks->Replace Block with another Block.
