I was just wondering what other people were for floor joist layout's, is it just a case of drafting them out. If so are you changing the veiw range to remove door's, switching them off and using the linework tool to fill in the gap's.

Hi Paul,

I usually duplicate the floor plan (rename accordingly) & then if I wish to model the joists I'd use structural elements after first turning off unwanted elements using visability / graphics control.

Otherwise you could just use 2D linework to represent joists, etc

I have tried modelling up a roof structure with real joists, but it was too painful for my simple needs to bear and though effective, if I have to do rafter or joist layouts I simply draft them up.

Martin P posted a trick way back for embedding a detail component in a family so that if you placed a line representing the joist on a plan you would see the timber in section. That will give you an accurate representation but is more complex than I have needed so I just use lines and array or copy them as need be, but yes, switch off anything you don't need and set walls etc to coarse, also consider making it a structural discipline plan, which will remove the non loadbearing walls, alternatively make your loadbearing partitions a different type and give them a paler fill.

Thank's Pete, making it a structural discipline plan to remove the non loadbearing walls is somthing that I will try as at the moment I just make them invisible using the linework tool.
