Why do in place families fall to bits when I move them? I am working in a model somebody else in office did - he used a lot of in place families. When I rotate (with disjoin) or move (with disjoin) they just fall to bits??? why? is this a bug or is there something I am missing here?

Very puzzling. Perhaps some of the parts are pinned not just locked. Disjoin should free any locked constraints but I'm not sure about pinned items. Good luck.

Because the objects in the family are constrained to objects outside the family. When you rotate - they try to keep those relationships.
I'd suggest replacing them with generic families...
