View Full Version : Elevations topo to Levels
How do you approach a drawing when my level one starts at 0 ft. Level 2 10 ft. ect.
I do the topo surface with elevations absolute (595') which would be equal to my level one.
Any tips on how to approach this topic. I can't do elevations based on absolute dimensions.

I think this post (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=5218&highlight=level)might set you on the right course.

Thanks for the start. It is still a little bit out of my league. Can you be a little more descriptive on the process or more emphasis on the logic side.
Thanks,

Say your Project Level 1 ( 0' 0" ) corresponds to an Absolute Level of 595' 0".
Firstly lock the relationship of all your levels using a dimension string and locking the dimensions.
Then select one of the level lines and properties > Edit > Elevation Base - change from Project to Shared.
Then, Tools > Locations and Coordinates > Relocate this Project. Now select a point on the Level 1 level line and move it vertically 595' 0". This is the same process as moving any element.
Your old Level1 now reports 595' and the other levels report their absolute levels also.
Your imported topo relates to these levels.
Have a look at the tutorial "Documenting you Project" "Annotating and Dimensioning" then "Setting your base elevation". It will help you get the general idea. If you simply relocate your base elevation to 500' the program has no way of knowing that you want to have all the other levels reporting the same relative elevation. therefore you have to do something different. The tutorial explains it. I just went through this same process, but here in Victoria we are a bit close to sea level:-)

This is where the tools menu comes in handy. Under the tools menu there is a category called Locations and Co-ordinates.
First up you need to create a new location. Go to this menu and choose Manage locations. Duplicate this location and give a new name, then click okay. Now go to the menu again and choose select locations and choose the new location.
Now go to an elevation or section and select relocate project. Click somewhere on the screen and set the dimension for the difference in levels. In your case the difference is 595'. Now select one of the levels and go to its properties, select edit/new at the top and change the base from project to shared.
The levels should now update with their correct locations. Now simply move the elevation back to the 0 height position which will now be at the topo level.
Thanks guys. I think I am on track now. Only thing though is my topo is not imported. I used absolute elevations by picking. When I did this the topo went 585' above my level one (which is now 585'. So I redid it and entered elevations relative to my level 1 elevation. (eg. -7", -12" ect.)
