To in-place or not to in-place

Other than the fact that an in-place family can't be 'dropped' into another project are there pros and cons for in-place families in other peoples' experience? For example, do they add considerably to file size?

The main rule of thumb we use is to 'model' the family externally IF you intend to use it in many places in your model.

We experience great difficulties in placing in-place families in different locations (due to ref planes etc that they are drawn on)

Also - In-place families that are copied inside a project are individual instances so you loose the ability to change one and ripple that change throughout the model.

Keep in-place families to the miniumu in my experience.
