In place walls, windows, doors and wall hosted families

Windows, doors and other kind of wall hosted families behave quite a weird way.
Some doors are supported by in place walls, some windows are not.
I tried using a wall hosted family to cut a void in in-place walls. I get weird results : the faces resulting from the void are not the same color than the wall (not the same material?)

Actually, I try and design an old existing building. Walls are thick and not straight, so I tried and make them as in-place walls.

Anyone has any idea how I should design the walls?

Actually, I feel that door and window families using voids don't work properly, whereas families using openings seem to work fine. Is that correct, and is that normal?
