View Full Version : "Current View Only" linking...

Hello:

When linking AutoCAD drawings into Revit, I'm recommending that users select the "Current View Only" option. This should save users the trouble of managing the visibility of linked files in views where they're not needed. This can be a significant issue in larger projects.

I understand that the user will need to copy the linked file into a different view if it is needed there.

Is this the right course of action?

Will copying linked files into other views affect file size and system performance?

It really depends on the use of the background. here is the response I got from ADSK when I asked the same question. I had done it the way you suggested. this is the email I received. So my solution is to make a workset called Dwg Links, that is OFF by default. then link your dwgs NOT current view only on to this workset. this way you can see them in all views if you want. Note that if you need to beable to bring them to the front or back, you will need to copy/paste align them in those views.

Scott,

The recommended use of links is to import them into the whole project and then remove them from the views not where they are not needed as opposed to what you have done. If you find that there is still a considerable lag time and you wish us to investigate please upload all the project files to the FTP site for which I have sent a separate email.

sorry to drag up an old thread - but I am trying to answer the same question now - and came across this.

working with an arch who has 18 floors of CAD files to be linked into my REVIT MEP project.

I have imported the CAD files into the entire model ie. not "current view only".
I have all the levels (from a structural model) so they are sitting at the correct elevation...(for all the good that does) and I now have a base set of views to use for my MEP work.

I was going to just "duplicate with detailing" for all my MEP services views - works fine.

Is this sensible?

should I be using current view only - or would that way mean a separate instance of the linked file for each view, while the other way is just putting it in one time and controlling through visibility?? Do I have this right?

My basic understanding is that "current view only" imports it as a symbol but the other way imports as geometry -- is that the only point?

I am really stumped to find a good up to date document on best practice here.

If anyone had any thoughts I would be very appreciative.
