SWEEP MATERIAL COLOR INCONSISTANT

I am creating some handrails as sweeps
I have assigned a wood material to the handrail
the material color shows up when I "finish sweep"
but when I "finish family" the colors turn grey
this does not happen to all handrails, what am I missing here?

Postscript: this color issue only occurs in perspective views, the color shows up
in an isometric view...wierd

I think the issue is probably related to the way the phase filters are set in the different views.
