ive got a problem with a window, i have a window that is going to have a lower sill and some trim between the sill and actual window. so my sill is low into the brick below, but i need to cut out the brick above and in the sill without cutting out the concrete wall behind that needs to extend to the u/s of the window frame. i cant use 2 cuts because when the file is brought into revit structure to do the concrete wall elevations my structural person cannot snap to any cuts, only openings, and revit will not allow me to cut geometry and have an opening at the same time, please help, right now my elevations and sections look horrible due to this issue.

shaner,
Nothing comes to mind within the family itself, however, I was thinking that maybe using a stacked wall where the wall changes thickness at the window insertion point might be an option. (Although probably not the best option). Sorry, it's the best I could come up with.

You can cut the wall from a wall-hosted family (window). So create a void in the family and cut your wall accordingly.

ive tryed to cut the void in my family. it wont let me cut the void for the brick when i have the opening for the rest of the window

Are you trying to place the window opening and the void in the same place?
Try making the opening just large enough for the window itself and place the void below that.

You need to delete the opening and use multiple voids instead of any openings. Note when you make your voids they will cut your geometry, so you have to "un cut" the geometry by making the voids smaller than you need, then after you've made sure they arent voiding out your geometry you make them the full size you need.

this is exactly what i want to do.. but my structural engineer is having trouble clicking on lines created by "cut openings" when she links my file into Revit Structure and is drawing her structural elevations - is there any way we can fix that problem?

does anyone know how to get structural to see these void cuts so they can do their elevations?

Well another option is to split the task into two different families, and then group them. Make the window family with no opening or voids, and then load in a separate void/ opening family, for the opening, and group the two and manually coordinate any size changes between the two. Might work anyway.

thats just not possible with 100's of windows around the building, thats just asking for trouble

they will just have to place their own opening.

well my best guess then is to model it with the opening tool in the window family and then nest the void you want in either that family or nest both on another 'parent" family. That should (could) get you the void cut you want and your engineer the coordinated openings.
