I have attached my framing and have a problem on making the valley rafters for the front dormer. They will be 8x12's and the system will have 2x6 T&G decking on them. I have all of that in my main model I have tried to do one as you will see, but have no idea how I did it. It is close but not correct. Could someone take a look and even fix it so I can see how it is done? If not, explain the procedure so I can get it right. I just can not get the concept down for these rafters that go in the z direction. Thanks for you help.

at a quick glance it appears that you made a reference plane and extruded a shape along that path. it appears then that the extrusions was unassosiated from the plane it was created in and possibly rotated into possition.

Does this sound correct?

As a framer for 20 years, I have to say I don't think your valley rafter will have a notch in the top of the member like you have shown there. I could be wrong, but it is usually not done that way. Check with your post and beam supplier.

I'll attach my modified hip in your drawing for you.

What I have done is make a line based framing system. Hips, valleys, commons, and jacks. On a floor plan, all you would have to do is draw the lines on a flat plane, then pick the line to place your hip/valley. Your valley would be a simple line drawn at a 45 and to the correct length. All the other work is done for you.

I am pretty sure this is how i did it, but I got frustrated and started doing anything and everything and dont exactly remember what I ended up doing.

This is a timberfame system and they will have the notch in the vallys so they can lay the decking on both to line up. Thanks for your help and I will try and see if I can do what you did.
