Unable to select or manipulate Objects from a .DXF file

Hi, this is probably a super beginer question but....

I have a .dxf file that I want to work with. Except that I find that I cannot manipulate it in any way. There's two tabs at the bottom of the page, one labeled model amd one labeled layout. I see nothing in the model tab, but the layout tab I can see the drawing but not select or manipulate it at all.
