I have a question concerning AIA Layering Standards. Are you able to add to the Major and Minor categories so that you can have more choices for the layers? Example: Need to add a Minor for Posts (wood) and a Minor for Framing.

im not sure what version of ADT youre using, in 2004 you open the layer control dialogue box, select Tools, Standards, and edit and youll be able to add to your selections.

Adding to the Major and Minor fields in ADT is certainly possible. If you are trying to follow the U.S. National CAD Standard to the letter [the AIA layer guidelines form a part of the NCS], you are not permitted to invent new Major field values [not that that stopped the ADT development team]. ;-)

You are permitted to create your own Minor field values, provided that there is not already a proscribed value for that sort of content and provided that you properly "document" your additions.

The AIA standards have many minor group abbreviations that should be used before you make up your own 4-letter/number abbreviation.

Here are some links that maybe of some assistance with abbreviations;
