I am very interested in knowing how others are keynoting and calling out details in their revit drawings. Are many here using the full keynote feature in revit? I personally would rather just be able to place a generic keynote callout into my drawing, just like I do in CAD. Are there many here who are doing this? And if so, what type of callout family do you utilize when doing this?

Same with detail callouts. Can a callout family be made that uses a line rather than a rectangle? Can a callout be made that you can manually fill in rather than having it automaticaly filled in and create a detail view?

Thanks for any and all help you can give on this.

You can create a drafting view referencing back to the callout and in the drafting view you can add the level of detail or detailing you want to add.
To create the callout referencing to a drafting view you have to go to select callout before drawing in your callout tick the option reference other view
About using keynotes:You can use the keynote table which comes in with Revit or if you create your own keynote text file you can then specify which keynote file you want to use in a project. If you pre load keynotes into your families once the family is loaded into a project and you keynote the family you won`t have to go back to the text file and assign it again or before you keynote the object select it and in its properties you can add an element keynote. For example if you select the wall you can add you can then add an element keynote to the selected wall type and i you go to structure edit you will then be able to add material keynotes to different material layers.if you then do a material takeoff you be able to see the keynotes you assigned.
With families if you add material keynotes to the materials of different objects styles. Once that family is loaded into a project and you keynote by material it will read the different keynoting specified for each object style and you can still keynote by element if you want to.

Thanks. I pretty much figured out how we will be using the keynotes by editing the text file to fit our needs. But now I have another question:

How can I make a keynote family that has editable text outside of the keynote box? For example, I want to have a square keynote with optional text objects on each side of the square so I can put things like 'typ' or 'sim'. Can this be done? I can't seem to figure out how.

Thanks again

You can edit the keynote tag and add the tpye and sim text in the family. To control which text you want to be visible you just have to assign a Yes/No parameter to the text and set it up in such a way that if type is yes sim will be No.

OK, I see what you are saying here, I think, but what about having the option of no text? And how about having the text option on all sides like in the attached image? You see, I need something like this because depending on where the keynote is placed on the plan, there may only be room available on a certain side for the text.

Thanks for all the help

regarding keynotes - our office uses two methods, many times on the same project:

1. We will use a number with a circle, triangle, hex, ellipse, what have you, that has a leader attached and pointing to an object, condition, etc. On the side of the sheet, we have notes that correspond with each number. We want to do these by sheet.

2. We also use on the same project, the CSI keynotes, again, by sheet.

My question - if we wanted to use both simultaneously, we cannot do that, since Revit currently only reads one keynote file. So what are our options in Revit for getting this to actually work the way we want it to? We tried creating a symbol that can be scheduled in a noteblock. However, every time we drop in the symbol to the project and fill in the number, it resets the information associated with the symbol to be blank in the schedule until we fill it in again from the pull down. For example, note 1 would be calling out a site condition. We drop another note in to point out that same condition elsewhere on the project, fill it in with 1 and the information in the schedule disappears. This gets frustrating when you have many notes. Additionally, the limitation of this method is that you have to have a different noteblock for every sheet, therefore you have to have a differently named symbol for every sheet.

There has to be an easier way. Can anyone tell me what that is?

Thank you!

Have a look at this attached family on how i setup the Yes/No parameters to be controlled by the by one integer parameter. Now depending on which value you can the change the integer digit to match what you want or just create different families with different text and visibility that way you can simple change the type you want to use when keynoting Do not waste your time trying to setup some integrated formulae

Thanks Nelson, I'll give it a look.
