I want to insert an image into a drawing and not have it linked to a path or file name. In the end, the AutoCAD file will be the only document needed. I'm not having any success.

I don't believe that is possible. Images are like XREFS; you need to have access to the other file, or it won't work.

That's because it can't be done except by using OLE and OLE is not entirely reliable with images.
Try copy/paste via the clipboard - note that you can't usually rotate an OLE object after insertion so make sure the image starts off the right way around.
In case you care - the reason an image can't be bound into a dwg file is that acad cannot interpret raster data.

The easiest way I have found is to first insert your image into Word and save
Then insert>ole object>create from file>file name. This should insert you image as a embedded word document.
Hope this helps

I'm glad for you - you're one of the lucky ones. :-)

This appears to work for me too. I'm on 2005, and I copied a PNG image from Paint Shop into CAD and got an OLE object.
