Attached is a PDF of the "presentation" plan that will get "colored" up tomorrow...but by hand, so maybe I can get it scanned later on.
What's interesting about this, to me anyway, is that the site improvements are in Microstation and imported into the plan. While there are a few inconsistencies, they don't have to do with the applications, just disconnects between disciplines and they are minor enough at this point (I hope...)
The meeting this plan, three building exterior renderings, a site plan and two exterior elevations are going to is a Board of Ed conflagration. Hopefully this will help stimulate thought and the project will move forward! (no time for changes at this point, but crit's are welcome)
Worthy of mention, this project is going to attempt to achieve LEED certification. Preliminarily we believe we can qualify for the lowest level but there are many possible points that need more research before we can determine if a higher level is attainable.

Wow, this is an interesting plan. Do you have any 3D views of this so we can get a better idea what this looks like? Please post more images as you develop them - I'm quite interested to see more on this project.

Nice work Steve-O! Big project, and thats an addition? Seems to be a specialty school, focusing on special education?
Its cool to see the differences between CA/NY for school design. In CA, we can't have a classroom smaller that 960 SF. Why, you ask? Well, California requires a percentage of modular (read: mobile home) classrooms on all campuses. A mod is typically 32' x 30', or 960 SF. (sometimes 40 x 24). So all classrooms must be at least 960 SF to match the mods. (usually science labs are larger) This also allows 32 students per classroom at 30 SF per student.

Tomorrow is scramble, finishes, scramble, more finishes, scramble....render...wait...render...wait. So I'll post the results after all is off to the meeting... tomorrow night?
It's gross sf is a little over 60k...Special Ed project...12:1:1 ratio classrooms...State Ed in NY mandates a min of 770 for such a class...ours are slightly larger to allow for cabinets since the 770, in spirit, is clear floor space. This building is sandwiched in between two existing school buildings and the ARC is the link between. It's gone through about six iterations...three before I got involved. The platform remains an enigma...since I have a long theater background, it is annoying to have such a poor example of such a space in this project. But everyone assures me that it is for general assembly and little "things". We'll see....I "know" theater people you see...
All the world's a platform...

Looks like impressive work. I'd like to see the 3D stuff though I think you have already posted snippets of them to us while in the design stage.
Tell me, does the ADA legislation cover educational builings or is there separate control of this issue through SEN provision etc? I'm impressed to see the ramped access to the stage and I'm curious to know if this is something that has been included because, as Scott notes, it looks like an SEN specialism school or becasue such forethought is now required in every building?

Yes, I have posted some stuff awhile back...it's the same project.
We are careful to make sure everything is accessible and yes the ADA and our State Education Department requires accessiblity, equal access, to all school functions. If you noticed, virtually every exit door is pulled back into the building slightly so the slab can be flush with the door sill and covered by roof/canopy. Not a new concept, but a 4" drop can be tough on a wheel chair...and ramps are yucky :D (technical term)

Nice work, Steve.
How do you setup the 'bar' title for the view on the sheet? That's something we've been wrestling with as we begin implementation.

The UDS/NCS view title is a struggle...but here's how I'm coping for now.
The box is a symbol family: 1, 1.5, 2 "cells" wide up to full sheet (6). The view title is a separate family that is moved to the proper spot when a view is added to the sheet.
It's okay as solutions go...if I could lock the position of the view title itself then I'd be groovy. Groovier would be a box that could be part of the view title but I couldn't get it to work at the time and resorted to this kluge. Once a couple are on a sheet they end up helping you align others in a common row or column which is nice.
The views morphing as the project views are tweaked is very annoying though and almost as distracting as having to chase around that sort of stuff the old way.
My thoughts...

WIP follow up...here's four shots rendered, guess which one I spent the least time on? Also, an older area plan.
These are shrunk for download ease...but I could post the originals if someone wants me too.

Hey, I know that asphalt.
Great Job Steve, the modeling is fantastic and the materials look great. Lighting/sky is pretty good too. Now all you need is a little more "site" detail, curb cuts, sidewalks, edge plantings, tree's and maybe a pinch of people, and a splash of cars. If you had more time you can focus on the composition/framing of the images. (foreground, etc)
again, great work :D

steve,
post a larger image of the entry, I'd like to use that for IOTW :D

Hey thanks for the kind words. Aah for more time....I wanted desperately to do some site stuff but I was backed into a corner with very late design decisions. Now that there IS a site concept to do I may slip back in and model it up...
Which front did you have in mind? The straight on or side shot?
I'll post when I get to the office...Emma took us to the ER again for the second time in 3 weeks...with her, "bump the head" "stop breathing fainting deal"...she's fine, but we got home about 2am  Something to look forward to Chris, READY??

The sketch front sm one ( the off angle one), I like that one the best.
Something to look forward to Chris, READY??
uhhhh noooo.... :?
wow, glad she's ok, i can't begin to imaging what that's like :(

Here's both "fronts"...wait, you don't like my site design? Asphalt baby, low maintenance, easy to plow, no landscaping bills what's not to like?? I spec asphalt on all my jobs, funny I don't have many repeat clients though, could THAT be it? Couldn't be my wit or winning smile :D
On the render side, I found that the process of render a bit, fix, render a bit, tweak...really took it's toll on the PC. If I did a final after that process I had a 50/50 chance of "hanging". Also the render took twice as long to finish. So, after "learning" this, I tweaked away, saved, restarted the PC, then rendered. This way the renders took about 20 minutes each. Obviously this behaviour is going to be different for each PC's peculiarities, but this one is pretty new, it's "only" weakness is the 512mb of ram. I actually thought about bringing my 1G ram chip in from home but chickened out.

Aloha Steve,
How did you do the reveals (vertical and horizontal) on the walls? 8)
Steve_Stafford
2003-07-04, 02:42 PM
Design Bar>Modeling>Host Sweep>Wall Sweep
I created a reveal profile family first, imported the profile into the project, then created a wall sweep that used that profile. Then used the command I listed above to place them. I could place them randomly and move them around afterward. Refer to the tutorials for working with sweeps.
I did get some error messages when placing some but I attributed it to the fact that the wall is curved (335'4" radius). But the sweep showed up despite the message(s).
HTH
Oh, I could probably have done it with the reveal option too...
