Can't Dimension Railings!

What's up with this? I have dimensioned railings before and now, on the project I am currently working on, I cannot? Did a search and this has been brought up before but nobody seems to know the reason for it.

I don't need any work arounds, I know what to do...I would just like to know why this happens?

Are the railing elements you are trying to dimension parallel to the view plane?

Can you give us a screen shot of the stair in plan and the view you are trying to dimension?
