View Full Version : can you "un-family" and in place family?

Ok, I have a user who created several casework layouts by making an in-place family per room and placing the casework families like that. This causes several issues, so my question is:
is there a fast way to "un-family" those families and place the components in the main model? I tried copy/paste but you can't copy between a family and a project. I haven't been able to think of a good way...

I am not exactly sure what you want here, but if you open the in place family you can copy and paste from the in-place family editor in the project to a new family (rfa). The only one in place family where this does not work is the Mass family. I hope this provides a work around for you.

Bad news:
I have always told users not to make in place families (except for highly complex not to be repeated non rectilinear shapes) because in place families can NEVER be made into real families.
Good news:
It might be possible for a work around for this dilemma in RA2008 because groups can be turned into files, linked, etc. This might mean that you can create a funky workaround via save as... new group...
It's a long shot, but if it works then it'll be cool.
Cross your fingers.
Cheers,

Unfortunately I already tried the 2008 thing and it doesn't work. You can group the objects and save them out, but they save as an rfa, not an rvt. That actually is a way to create a standard family from an in-place one now that I think of it, but it doesn't help with my dilema. I think he's just going to have to recreate.

it should b possible to copy paste sketch lines. though I don't know how much time that will save.

they aren't sketches, they are families that are nested into the in place family.

I was referring to the sketches that have to define the geometry the family(s) are composed of. Depending upon the complexity of the geometry and its associated sketches it might be a time saver to copy paste the sketch lines.

Hi Steve,
have you tried teresa's suggestion? it should work. i am still on 9.1 and it works fine for me. edit the in-place family, CTRL+C copy to clipboard. open a new family rfa file, and CTRL+V to paste from clipboard.

I can't wait to try this. I have had users fall into this exact same trap and I always use it as an opportunity to say (very politely) "I told you so." If this works, I will have to come up with another way to let them [not me] learn lessons the hard way...
LOL

y'all misunderstand. all of the geometry in the in-place family is also in external families already. User created an in-place family simply to nest external families into so that each room's casework would be in one "package". there is no new modeling in the in-place family or your suggestions would work. It's simply a matter of re-laying out the casework in the actual project instead of nested into an in-place family...
