View Full Version : Anyone have problems running Outlook and Revit?

One of my clients thinks they have identified an issue with workset-enabled projects and Outlook. They see a pattern of failed STC operations when Outlook is open on the workstation during STC.
Is anyone else having a problem with this?

I keep Outlook open all day, every day when im in Worksetted projects. I dont see any correlation between failed STC's and Outlook here...
EDIT: I see a big correlation between failed STC's and running out of memory, however. Perhaps having Outlook opened is pushing the computer in to needing more memory than is available in the Physical or Virtual Memory?

Heavy use of Outlook and workset Revit files in our office. We've never seen any issues with STC's. We do have several different file servers where projects are stored across our WAN and a stand-alone Exchange server at our main office location.

We recommend that Revit projects be placed on a separate server. Could there be an issue with so many emails floating around that it times out the STC? With the low costs of servers, having one just for the Revit projects is low cost insurance.

Thanks, everyone. Exchange and the Revit central files are on separate dedicated servers. Some of the projects are local servers, some are VPN through Riverbed. So, it's not necessarily Outlook that is causing the errors. Just a coincidence, I guess.
Most of the machines have 2GB of RAM, and the local office is wired for gigabit, with most machines spec'd with a gigabit card.
We'll keep looking for the problem.
Thanks!

Most of our machines have 2GB of RAM as well, and weve discovered on a large project, its fairly easy to max that out. Our larger projects (central file around 200 MB), during a STC, have a tendancy to kick right out of Revit, which we believe is being caused by the breach of Revit trying to use more than the 2GB of memory Windows is allocating it. At Autodesks suggestion, weve implemented the 3GB switch on a lot of those systems, to allow Revit the use of more virtual memory. It seems to have stopped most of the Revit Vanishing acts (you click STC, and Revit disappears from your screen...).
You might want to look in to it. The autodesk white papers give some information on how to tell if it may be a potential solution for you:
