I draw an existing wall
I draw a door new construction
the door did not create a hole in the wall in 3d - is this normal?

Yes it is normal. This THREAD (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=5649&highlight=openings) might help give you some ideas if you need to show a demo open first.
