Does anyone know of a free program that can be used to draw toolbar Icons that is better than the icon editor in acad. I want to draw better looking icons and the editor is some what difficult to use for fine detail work.

Any image software should work, you just need to resample your image down to a 16 pixel x 16 pixel bitmap when you are done.

MSPaint, that comes with Windows, can be used.

If you want something a little more powerful, check out GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/index.html). This program is free and is almost as powerful as Adobe Photoshop.

If you do try out GIMP, check out GUG (GIMP User Group) Forum (http://gug.sunsite.dk/forum/). This is a excellent source if you need any help.

I feel your pain - ever tried to do custom buttons in Excel? Life's too short.

MSPAINT has better tools, but you need tiny eyes to edit on their 16x16 grid.

The GIMP is, with respect, LARGE -- and very capable once it's loaded. It loads for bear.

I've used Borland's IMAGEDIT and ICONFORGE (www.cursorarts.com). The latter gives you 30 non-contiguous days' functional demo which is surprisingly generous, but neither are free...

I found this http://www.axiomx.com/PixelToolbox/ that has some nice smarts and is written up as a freebie. Have a look.

(there are others - google on "free icon editor")

Must go, the big match is starting (Oz vs NZ).

cheers,
Hugh
