Just wondering if anybody managed to run the batch upgrade utility for family files on Revit 2008 yet. I keep getting the failed to open document error.

I ran it fine, same as previous upgrades. Now if I can remember how to delete all those .001 files . . .

I do not have 2008 installed but in previous versions the problem I had was that the files properties were read only, after changing to write it went fine. Hope it helps.

And yes - for some reason all my files are listed as 'Read Only' - you need to select the main content folder, do a Properties on the folder, de-select 'read only' and apply to all sub-folders. It should work fine after that!

And to also catch backups above .009, I use *.0??.r* It will find both family and project backups.

I take it back. It only ran through about 1,000 files in my library, then stopped working. Now all I get when I try to upgrade the balance is a "Failed to Open File" message. I checked & none of the files are read-only.

Sounds like a support request waiting to happen!

Place this file in the directory you want to check for .00 files and it will delete them all.

Watch that tool though. We had quite a few legit files get deleted by that tool because of the way we had to name some of our files for a client...

We use _ as opposed to . in the name of the file if we have to.

I like the windows search method personally, because it will do all sub-folders as well (if you tell it to), plus you get the benefit of seeing what your going to delete. I used this search criteria... *.0???.* (pretty much the same as muttlieb) just yesterday and it worked great, course I didn't have 1000's of files to look through either.

Did you get it to work?
I have tried- same error message. Not a permissions issue... not a backups issue...
Maybe a southern hemisphere issue??

Dean, did you use the batch upgrade file on the Revit CD. I have tried everything, even taking out file names with spaces - and _ in the file name, but no success.
Sarah, it must be because we are upside down that it doesn't want to work.

Let's just double-check you all are doing the right steps.
The utility will automatically go into all subfolders. I generally don't attempt to upgrade my entire library in one go... I'll usually break it up a bit. You might just try one sub-folder for the first batch.
Make sure there are no family "backup" files, e.g. column.001.rfa.
Run the Upgrade_RFA.bat utility in the family folder.
This generates a famlist_rfa.txt file.
Then drag the Upgrade_RFA.txt file onto the Revit "shortcut" icon (I usually copy the shortcut to the folder where I have the batch utility).
It's that last step people often make the mistake on. They think they're suppose to drag the famlist_rfa.txt file onto the Revit icon, but you're not.

Thanks. It worked a treat when done correctly. Why did I think you had to drag the family text file to Revit?

tobie, that's exactly what I did wrong. I've got to learn to read the directions more closely!

I followed Irusun's procedure & got an error msg at the 1st file - "Can't complete processing" (or something like that, I did this yesterday morning) - it's the same msg that I've seen when I tried to rescue a corrupted journal.
I'd like to batch upgrade my library but having 2008 tell me that it has to upgrade any given file as I bring it in isn't the worst.
You've all had some different level of sucess doing this?
Glenn: I had a similar problem when batch upgrading (I forget the exact error message). I had a few corrupt families, and the batch upgrade would stop when it encountered these. What I did was to edit the "famlist_rfa .txt file to remove any families already upgraded, as well as the corrupt family that caused the problem, and restarted the batch upgrade. I had to repeat the process 3 times (3 corrupt files) before I was finished.
Hope this helps.

I did the upgrade on 2440 files yesterday and found one set of families that was not working. I did not try to do the whole lot in one, but did it in their sub directories in the main directory.

Still not woking for me!
The batch file gives me back a file called famlist.txt, not famlist_rfa.txt as you mentioned... do you think that means anything?
Am I using the same upgrade_rfa.bat file as the rest of you? perhaps someone could attach theirs, or the link to where they obtained it.
I tried it on a folder with 4 families in it- it should have worked!
But thanks for keeping this going, may we all get there in the end.

Just checking, you are not dragging the new text file created by the utility to Revit but the existing Upgrade_RFA.txt file?
EDIT: Added upgrade utility

YES!
That's it. I had left that file behind a long time ago.
Thanks for the persistence!
