I've been doing some searching in the forum and understood that this should work:
1) Create a inplace family based on a wall.
2) Do a "void extrude" to cut the hole.

I just get a orange cube where I try to cut the hole.

Any ideas that could help a beginner?

You must tell Revit to cut the hole in what object. Use Tools - Cut Geometry. follow the prompts in the command line, select the orange box, then the wall you wish to cut.

Just an FYI, A much easier way to cut a hole in a wall in the edit the wall's profile and sketch in the"hole"

How about a plain window opening? It's the easiest of them all.

Three helping answers! Great, thanks!

I totally missed the profile-edit in the manual. Thanks for pointing it out.
And the window-opening is also a fast way to cut a rectangular hole.

liddes,
The type of opening depends on whether the "hole" is phase related or not. If the "hole" is to be inserted or removed at a later stage (another phase), use the opening family as it can be inserted and removed as an object. The profile edit mode is perfect if the "hole"is permenant.
