Is there a limit as to how many times you can select undo in a row? It seems as if when we want to undo some commands it will only let us go back a set number of commands.

I'm not sure of any limitation other than going back to the beginning of your editing session. The listing in the UNDO selector does not automatically scroll as you drag the cursor down but you can use the scroll bar on the right side of that pull down to find the last action you want to get to and then Revit will select all actions between the first and last.

There is certainly a limit to it, but it doesnt appear to correlate to number of commands. Certain commands seem to invalidate the entire undo list, as in... It just grays itself out. I dont have any knowledge of which commands it is, besides its always the command i just used...

Word files get larger over time, until you 'save as...'. That difference in file size is your number of Undo commands.
I believe Revit works in roughly the same way, but with a limited additional file size. The number of undo's can be altered in most programs, even (or especially) Photoshop, but haven't found it in Revit.

To my recollections the limit is somewhere from 30 to 50 commands or so.

Originally the limit was 100 commands. Don't know if that has changed in the last few years. Also, since Undo commands aren't saved, they have no effect on file size.

I think that "save" resets the counter. Otherwise you can go back to the beggining.

I believe you can undo all the way back until when you opened the file unless you do something that clears that list. Saving local and to central don't seem to clear the list.

Maybe we can start a list as to what things do clear your undo's
1. I know deleting views will clear your undo list.

If I delete a view and then select undo (crtl+z) it still works, so the list can't be cleared.

The list CAN be cleared, im just not sure what commands or actions clear it. I see it happen all the time. Certain commands force the undo button back to gray, and there is no history in the button.

You are correct, but I found that deleting a view will not clear the list for me.

There just does not seem to be any constant factor in the issue.

Deleting a view got rid of my undo and prompted my post. Then your reply made me test again and created a new view then deleted it and thought **** you're right I'm going crazy. Then I deleted an elevation view that was in the file from a while ago and my undo list got cleared.

So I guess it has to be a view you don't already have borrowed or an elevation view?

I wonder if it has anything to do with worksets.

I have not used worksets in a while and not to often during the course of teaching do we I get into worksets (the server is locked down way to tight), I will continue to watch this one and see if I come up with something.....anything.
