Is it possible to merge rooms or change the room boundries? I would like to be able to add the area of my closets to the area of the bedrooms, but I am unable to find a way to do so.

You will need to be sure that the walls separating these spaces are not room bounding.
This is one of the instance parameters of the wall style.
You can also use Room Separation Lines to define boundaries without using room bounding elements such as walls.
All these tools can be found on the Room and Area tab of the Design Bar. If you select the Room tool the options bar will also display a button that will Display Bounding Elements so you can tell which elements will define room boundaries
