Upgrading linked files?

Normally we would upgrade all the linked files to 2008 first, then the main model. However, we have a project that has gone on indefinite hold, but we need to get into the main model for a bit. The question is, can we just open the main model in 2008 and not bother with the linked files? Will they just fail to load? Will they update for the session, but not be saved in 2008 format? Will the main file grow a second head and spit pea soup?
Just wondering.

The experience I've had with mixed files is that the Links will Upgrade every time you open the Main model - just for that session.

Not sure about the second head, but I'm pretty sure this process will not let you design your building in the shape of a cross....
