How can I change a reference level on an object that has already been created?
I have a beam which is on the wrong reference level, and I need to reassign it, but that category is grayed out in the properties dialog box.

Select then try the rehost tool in the top bar menu.

You'll want to select the beam first and then click the Edit Workplane button on the Options Bar. The Rehost option will require you to first set the view's workplane to the one you want the beam to use. With Edit Workplane you can just choose a different level or other workplane.

Thanks. That seems to work for beams. Any idea how with masses? I redrew some beams as masses in order to get them to show up as more than single lines in RCP, but now can't seem to move them.

Massing is not meant to make "stuff", it is meant to make overall building forms, the big picture. Unfortunately I frequently see ADT/ACA etc. users get tripped up by the terms mass and massing because a mass element in those applications is what Revit calls Generic instead. Massing is reserved for special behavior, hosting other building elements like walls, curtain systems, roofs and floors. It is also intended to provide very early metrics for your building form without the need to model specific building elements.

Since you've gone down this road, to change the workplane of a mass you'll have to edit the mass family and then select the solid you created in the mass family. Once you select that you'll have the same option to Edit Workplane.

To the real issue at hand...structural beams show as "stick symbols" (thick lines) at detail level coarse. You should have been able to just change the detail level of your view to medium to get what you wanted. If you wanted coarse for the RCP you can override the categories in Visibility/Graphics (View Menu) and force them to use detail level medium.

I found I have to right-click 'Detach from Plane' before getting the 'Edit Work Plan' button to appear.
