I'm a one man Wild West architecture show.
I work out of the house, but like to wander about.
I have one PC in the office where I do most of my work. I also have a laptop in my living room where I can spend a little together time, and finally I have a third PC in my guy den (aka the fart cave). Can I legally run an instance of Revit on each machine, being there's never more than one in active use at any time?

I think that you can.

Main "office" PC as the main computer.
The Laptop as your mobile machine

Then perhaps your den is the new "Employee at home" machine. You'll have to contact Autodesk for a 2nd number for this machine.

Set it up like that and I believe that you're legal.

I believe this to be correct. There was another lengthy discussion about this last week on the forums and we all pretty much came to this conclusion.

You could use the PLU to move the license between the various computers. PITA but cheaper than a new license.

I believe if you use the name "the fart cave" that Revit won't actually run being sensitive to such language..better whisper it. PLU is Portable License Utility by the way. You can find it within the START menu > Autodesk > Revit Architecture 2008. You need to add each computer you use to it, same for the others. Ultimately you can transfer the license between them. Of course to do so you'd have to fire at least two of them up to do the transfer.

The legal statement if I remember correctly is the license is only allowed to be run on the work and the home pc of that employee. Now your Laptop will be considered as your home pc so essentially your den pc would be illegal.

My better half coined the phrase. She claims hat's merely truth in advertising.

Rules, rules ... what should it matter how many computers the software is on AS LONG IT IS ONLY BEING USED ON ONE MACHINE at any given time.

I only know of Cinema 4D where that is the case - install as often as you like but you can only use one copy at a time on the same network.

There are probably others but for high cost applications that's the only one I've come across so far.
