I would like to be able to use the layer merge command (LAYMRG - express tools) from within the layer manager dialog box, rather than having to pick the objects or type them all in (at least give me a browse option).

(a wishlist item I posted 6 months ago, prior to the worm attack)

Sounds like a good idea to me

I just have to bring this one back up again.... I am using layer translate, and I load up some layer from a similar drawing... BUT the new one doesn't have all of the layers that I need... well, the one I'm working in does! BUT! I can't select the layers from the current drawing in the laytrans dialog box, I'd have to go do the laymrg thing, and either type the names or select the layers manually...

I think they should really merge the laytrans and laymrg functions together to get two birds with one stone... it would save me sooo much time and frustration...

I may be way off base as I haven't used the layer trans but if I am reading correctly you want to bring a bunch of layers from one drawing into another drawing without typing. Many years ago I would do such by simply inserting the drawing with all the layers I wanted. However, after the insert was started and data read in I would then hit the escape button. However, all of the layers were now in the drawing. Of course blocks and other stuff were to so a selective type of purge was necessary. Don't know if this helps or not but figured it was worth a try at helping out. Good luck.

that is a good tip to keep in mind jack, but, what I'm really going for here the MERGE part... plus, if they were in the drawing already, it would be harder to merge them with the existing, that's why I like the layer translate...

The situation is that I have a background plan for my campus, and as little projects are done, I take the MEPFP info from the contractors' drawings, and put it on this puzzle i'm putting together slowly.

But, of course, most of these drawings aren't my standard layers, so I want to change their layers, say, job001saductnew and job001saductex, and make them into one layer called mhvdus.

I have really gotten to like the layer translator. I made a drawing that has all the layers that i wish to use. I always load it when i use the command because AutoCAD remembers the last place i went when i load the file. I also use the laymrg command on occasion when there are just a few layers to change.

I agree that a command in the dialogue box form would be nice.
