There are many kinds of symbols according to CAD standard. For examples, there's a symbol for sprinkler and also a symbol for a pump, say inline pump. Also in Revit there are both annotation and symbolic lines. Both could be used for "symbols".

1) What's the real difference between annotation and symbolic lines in Revit?
1) For a sprinkler, I would show it in Plan view as annotaions. But I'm not sure if it make sense to show it as symbolic line.
2) For a pump, how did you describe it on the drawing in Revit? Show that pump symbol as annotatation, or just some lines(symbolic lines)?

1) Symbolic lines will not scale appropriately. Annotations are drawn in paper space, so if you draw a line to be 1/8", it will always be 1/8" on plan. Symbolic lines however will always represent their length in respect to the scale of the drawing. For example, a symbolic line of 1' will be 1/4" long on a 1/4" scale and 1/8" long on a 1/8" scale. A annotation symbol will always be the size you set it to be.
2) An annotation will probably be best.
3) we show the outline of the pump in halftone with a motor symbol on top of it.

.
3) we show the outline of the pump in halftone with a motor symbol on top of it.

1) What do you implement the halftone outline of the pump? And in which way do you draw the motor symbol, using annotation or symbolic lines? Are the pump symbol all the same in course, medium and fine view?
2) Mjdanowski, could you please upload a pump example for reference? just a simple example is enough.

If you go to "visibility/graphics" settings and check "halftone" under mechanical equipment, it will gray them all out. You can also set the visibility for mechanical equipment to whatever lineweight/color combination you would like. The actual motor symbol however, is a "generic annotation" family if you go to file->new->annotation symbol and then choose the template for generic annotation, you can create a symbol for anything you want, which will scale automatically for you when you change your view scale. The symbol is actually a separate family which we add on top of the actual motor on the electrical plans.

mjdanowski, thank you so much for this clarification.....
