Obviously you can create callouts that you can then detail up, but this can/will become tedious and repetative if the same detail is used in every project.
But what if you have a library of 1000's of AutoCAD standard annotated details that you would like to use in Revit, kind of like blocks in AutoCAD.
What's the best practice for this?
You can't use a family, because the dimensions won't show and text don't have leader lines.
You can't import the AutoCAD blocks everytime, because text and hatching don't import properly. Not to mention there are colour and line thickness issues.
I have been thinking about this issue for a long time now and can't come to any conclusion.

I've updated this list with some a couple additional thoughts generated from our discussion at the LUG meeting the other night.

Yeah, I read that post before posting this one.
I have a couple of issues regarding using AutoCAD files.
1. As mentioned before, hatch and text hardly ever imports as per the AutoCAD file. Always needs tidying up after importing.
2. By importing AutoCAD files, this goes against everyone who says that you don't need AutoCAD to finish a Revit project.
3. Since I don't have AutoCAD installed on my PC anymore (because I now use Revit) how do I create new annotated details?
4. Even if you DO get an AutoCAD file imported properly or after tidying up, in what Revit format do you save it as for future use.
This seems to be the biggest downfall with Revit in terms of preparing a set of CD's. And is avoided quite well in the online help files.
How do you create true Revit annotated details :?

I tend to produce my details over callouts then set the model display to not shown, group the detail componets then save the group. This can then be inserted into different projects over callouts and adjusted and locked to the model objects in the callout. I know this isn't using your existing Autocad details but it doesn't take that long to produce a detail and once you have created and saved it you can start to build up a libary of standard revit details.

I create a Drafting View at the appropiate scale and insert my Acad detail (black lines) and then explode it. I convert all my text to my Revit Font or I just re-labelthe detail. I heavy up the perimeter lines so the detail reads. I also may place Detail Components as needed. Now I have a extensive Revit Detail Library. In my last project, I copied the detail over a callout and turned off the model. This way I get all the grid and level tags. Grouping the details sounds like a great idea.

And even if you do produce details from callouts you can standardize those.
Simply export the view to DWG. Then import the view to a drafting view and explode if desired. Now everything is just drafting information.
You can save them for future use by either grouping and expoting the group. Or by just placing them in an empty project and copy/paste them to a new project.
