Is it possible to have trees in a 3D Shaded with Edges View? If so, any suggestions on where to find a family? (I've already checked out RevitCity).

Thanks!

You can import sketch up trees for this. The do work a little better with edges off as they end up a little bit black otherwise.

You can also make lollipop type trees if you like.

If you search in google sketch up trees you will find an entry under google warehouse sketchup. Have a look in there if you like.

I have uploaded 2 trees myself at RevitCity. One I just did the other day. They both show up in Shaded with Edges.

Here is one originally comes from Scott Brown and slightly modified to have nice plan representation.

Hey Guys. Been trying to get the work around on this.

I am trying to do the following.

- 2D tree in plan and elevations for 2d graphical purposes as the RPC trees are pretty naff graphically.

- In 3D views use the pre built standard revit RPC's

So I would like to acheive the following a tree that caters for all situations 2D and 3D. What I would also like to do is create a tree that when i change the 3d parameters i.e change from a 3 m tall tree the 2d graphics also parametrically scale also.

I have had an attempt at modifing the standard RPC families, trying to create the 2d? elements as masks and symbolic lines and also have tried an extruded solid with no joy of adding parameters. Any ideas?

Oh also Ive tried linking other families into the master RPC with no luck.

Any suggestions or successful attempts would be amazing

I would love to have something like this, as well. I took the tree posted above from Scott Brown some years ago, and in Family Categories and Parameters changed Render Appearance Source from Family Geometry to Third Party. Doing this makes an RPC tree appear in with the imported DWG 2D symbols. Then I made that RPC tree visible only in 3D.

The graphics works in a project (only the 2D symbols show in plan/elevation, and only the 3D RPC shows in 3D and rendered views), but like you said, there's no way to make the symbols scale appropriately with the tree height.

Each symbol does have an Instance Scale parameter in the family, but it appears there is no way to access that parameter in order to make it a function of the height parameter.

Note if you nest a symbol into the planting family, it will scale with the height.

So that means the plan and elevation representations need to be created as symbols instead of straight DWG imports?

If only there were a way to get those DWG's out of that "nice tree" family...

Scott, I'm still stuck trying to figure out if it's possible to get the DWG symbol representations in that "Nice Tree" RFA to scale with the height setting of the tree family. I exported the plan view out to DWG and isolated the plan view symbol only, saved it as a new DWG, and imported that into a Generic Annotation family template, and nested that into a Planting family template.

The symbol of course maintains it's real paper dimensions regardless of the drawing scale. I'm still not sure how it can be made to scale with the plant's height parameter. Any clues?

It needs to be in a "Planting" family nested into a "Planting" Family
Its as simple as that - Have a look at my example

Guys,

I also tried creating that perfect tree with nice plan symbols and everything scaleable using instance parameters. Were lost until I found this, now I'm building my own perfect trees!
