Surface patterns are not showing up on in-place sweeps created by picking a path (2D or 3D). Am I missing something simple?

I'm guessing that the surface is a compound curve? Revit can't display hatches on a compound curve...

Yea, I guess my question was a bit cryptic.

The first image is of a sweep created for a dropped masonry lug. It has no curves in the path or the profile. Should this be able to display the surface pattern?
The second image is of a compound curve above an entry porch. This sweep contains curves in both the path and profile.From what I hear the first sweep should display the surface pattern but the second cannot.
Okay, but why is the first sweep not displaying the pattern?
