Linking Families and parameters-one works other does not

I have a door with door slab families nested in them. Every time I place my glass door slab in the door, it will not give me the ability to link the width and height to the door width and height.
Why will this family not give me that option but the other door slab families I have in the door family work?
Is there some setting I am missing with the door slab that needs to come with that family?

Is the problem "child" a shared family? If so,the parameters are not available unless they are instance parameters.

Yes the "child" is a shared family to many doors families. However, I unchecked the shared box in the family category and parameters. This made the family work.

Is this ok to do or should I figure out how to redo some of my doors?
