Is it foolish to save a 2D group view as DWG then link the image back into Revit? Does Revit have a way to do this so i can avoid exporting?
I dont need to schedule group items, i just need light-weight 2D imagery in my views instead of heavy, irritable groups.

I don't know what you are after in terms of what the details are, but I don't think the idea of managing a big clump of externally linked files sounds like fun to me or Revit.
Recently I elected to dump my use of group flat electrical fixtures because of the performance drag, and went to simple line based families saved and loaded into the project.
Sure, I had to redraw everything.
Sure, it was a total PITA and took some time.
Sure, I won't ever create clunky slow line based groups en-mas for anything ever again.
But in the end, was it worth it? Sure was.
And yes, if you get use to setting up these little items for scheduling, even if you do not do so now, you'll have them ready on that unexpected day you find yourself needing it.
Not sure if that help at all, but there is my take.

So, all in all, i should develop a library of my own content that i can trust, be it simple or involved, and bim up from there...

I don't want to overstate that it is not good or not feasible to use liked content because I'm sure there are many firms using linked legacy data they already have developed, and many would argue my take for allot of reasons.
However, in my case, since I was faced with a bunch of work to get my content to work the way I wanted anyway, it just made sense to re-create it in Revit. This is esp. true now that I use only Revit for production of con-docs. With the exception of one off items, I use 100% Revit blended content without unsavory additives. The bonus is the ability to schedule or assign parameters even if it is data I do not pass along to the consumer. Like you said, so I can bim it up from there :).
