View Full Version : Can a .DGN file be converted to an AutoCAD drawing

I have several drawings that were drawn with Microstation before I came to this current position. I am needing to convert the drawings to either Autocad or Inventor. The computer that has the Microstation loaded on it is no longer in use and disconnected. However, the files still remain in place. Does anyone know how this task can be accomplished?
Thanks to all that help.

Hi dennis.141245,
First, Welcome to AUGI and congrats on your first post. :)
Second, This post probably should have been put in the AutoCAD General or Inventor forum so don't be surprised if one of the friendly and helpful moderators move it to a location they feel is more appropriate.
Third, (and most important to you). I know you can convert a DGN to a DXF and then open the DXF in AutoCAD.
Also, what version of CAD or Inventor or you using? 100 years ago when I used AutoCAD MAP I could xref in a DGN I assume you can still do this.
Hope this helps,

What version of AutoCAD are you using? If 2008, the just use the command ._DGNIMPORT.
Note this only works with V8 version .DGN files.
If this does not apply, because you don't have 2008, or the DGN files are not V8 version, then search google for other software and/or services to perform this translation.

G'day dennis.131245 (sorry I dont know your name)
Please note I have *moved* this thread from the AMUG Oklahoma Chapter Forum (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=510) to this one, as I believe it will be better served here.

Funny things can happen when .dng files are converted to .dwg files, especially with the text and fonts.

i have tried the command "dgnimport" and it turns out that the microstation that was used to create these drawings is from about 100 years ago. therefore the version is pretty old. thank you for the help.

As Maverick said, if you have AutoCAD Map, it includes a DGN import tool (which is different that the 2008 AutoCAD version)...
It may be of some help. If you don't have Map, email me a sample DGN and I will see it it can be converted (if you want)....
