Temperamental Link function

I have a file that will let me create groups ok, but when I hit the link button it pretends to be working- asks for a file name and location etc but then doesn't create the new file. Nothing, no error- the group remains as it was.. a group.

It is a big building, divided into worksets. I am trying to group and link an entire floor. It will sometimes work when I group very small sections. Is it a size thing maybe?

Anyone else had problems with this fuction??
BTW obvioulsy using 2008, but havn't installed the latest build yet. would that help?

I found out what the problem was-
Some of the walls which I included in the group were attached to some roofs and floors which I DIDN'T include in the group. No problem for the grouping, but apparently a problem for the linking.

It gives no indication that this is the problem, so if anyone else is getting into this territory that's one to watch out for!
