Applying Lights to Custom Family

I just created a new family (a book shelf) and want to attach a light to the end of the book case, but the light wont attach to the family and the icon of a circle with a line through it appears, does anybody know how to fix this?

Check the light you're using - it probably requires a wall or ceiling as a host. If that's the case, then you'll need to either create or find a light that is not hosted.
