Hi all,

I have an inplace family - window:sliding panel- but it does not technically cut walls. is it simply a matter of placing a void into the family to make it do so? Or, do I need to start with a window family template?

If the latter is the case, then is it possible to cut and paste my in-place data into a template that I create a family?

thanks..

Rule #1 for in place families:

Don't do them. Do not succumb to deadline, peer, or any other pressures. Everyone is NOT doing it, no matter what THEY say...

Rule #2 for in place families:

Don't do them. Do not succumb to deadline, peer, or any other pressures. Everyone is NOT doing it, no matter what THEY say...

Rule #3 for in place families:

If you make them, you had better pray you don't need them ever again, because you're pretty much screwed.

That being said...
In place families are for one-offers. If you want more than one of it in a project, or want to ever use it again in another project, or want to ever make it a real family, you had better just make a good ol' family. I think someone found a way to get an in place family into a real family, but it wasn't simple. Do another search of the forums to see if you can find it. That was admittedly back in the 9.1 days, so 2008 may have improved. I know I'm not much help here, but if I can prevent you from ever making another in place family (unless it really is the right thing to do) then it was worth the reading time...

Errrr...

I was wrong, there would appear to be no way at all...

live and learn...I guess.

thanks for the warning. Though, it is not very useful at this point, but i will heed your warning in the future.

I discovered part of the problem: not an in-place family. It appears that I made a floor based family, not a window family. I made it a while back, but I am not recalling the particulars. And, I cannot think why I would have done that. It is possible that I based it off of something else...who knows. At least I know why it doesn't cut anything.

We do a lot of customized details for our designs: mulled windows, millwork, historic/traditional details for entryways, windows, roof sweeps etc. I have often found myself staring at my screen trying to determine the best way....and sometimes it seems easier to just start crafting a family right there in the spot it is supposed to reside. And, yes, I have experienced the performance slowdown as the work progresses.

thanks again.

While editing the family - create a void object. Then use cut geometry to have the viod cut the wall. Then place yoru solid window egometry in the new opening.
