linked files linked into other files

this is the first time i have tried this, but i am having a few issues. We have a development with townhouse. there are various types of townhouses assembled into different building configurations. i would like to assemble the "pieces" in 1 file then link the assembly into a master site. that way i only have to manage 10 - 15 building instead of 70.

When i try this, revit tells me there are linked files in the linking file and that they wont be visible in the master file. is this the expected result, or am i missing a step. I thought this was addressed in 2008 so i am thinking that i am doing something wrong.

Anyone have any experience with what i am trying to do?

EDIT it appears that the linked files need to be attached in the "building" file instead of overlay (default setting). I just had to change to attach and save, and then the links follow with the building
