We occasionally have electrical outlets and switches affixed to casework: think of a kitchen island with a plug.
Electrical fixtures, like outlets, are floor or wall based. Is there a way to get casework-based outlets?

You can create a new electrical outlet family that is not hosted and then simply locate it accurately in 3D space.

I actually ended up making a wall type that is simply a 3/4" ply core, and then inserted that on the inside face of a cabinet. This let me have the 'wall' host the outlet.

Have you tried using a non hosted outlet then clicking on "rehost?

Or a face-based family? That does exactly what you want, and doesn't care what it is hosted on (as long as you're not trying to cut the cabinet with a void that is... Voids will only cut on floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs. Why? Only the developers know...)

I'll try the face-based, but my work-around (making a little wall inside the cabinet) keeps me from having to create brand new electrical fixtures.

Yes but it add more unneeded geometry and will need you to tweak your schedule. i dont think it's worth it since rebuilding some fixtures once will fix the problem for good.
