View Full Version : Mixed shading, and smoothing
Am I right in thinking that you cannot mix shading modes in Revit within a View?
As in the attached garage plan, it would be nice to have the car family shaded without lines but the rest shaded with lines.
Even the normal hidden line view shows all the lines on the Audi.
I can't see anything within the Family that would allow this but I live in hope ;)
It also seems to be the case that smoothing is not applied to Revit faceted surfaces - except for simple cylinders and the like?

Hi William,
I don't think you can achieve what you want at the moment. I thought you might be able to with the new graphic overrides in 2008, but I must have been dreaming.
I think the only way to achieve what you want is to have a 2D representation of the car built in to your 3D car family set to only be visible in plan (hopefully that makes sense??)
I have trouble with the whole facetting/polygon thing with CAD vehicle imports too.
Cheers,
Dean.

thanks, Dean.
I thought I had read somewhere that you could have a just 2D representation (this is used in 3D models in Nemetschek Allplan as well) - but I couldn't quite figure out how to do it in a Revit family.

Hi William,
From the screen shot it looks like the car model has been created in some other programme and imported into the Revit Family.
Select that block in the revit family and click on 'visibility' in the options bar and uncheck 'plan/rcp' view.
Then in the plan view just import a car 2d block (plan representation)-When importing remember to check 'Current View only' in the Import Options dialog.
Hope this helps,

What we have done is made 2 identical views. One has the building without entourage (shaded with edges) and the other has the entourage only (shaded). Then we overlay one on the other on a sheet. It comes out looking very nice.

I was about to suggest exactly the same thing :) !
@Shruti - many thanks, I will try that method.
the model is from www.formfonts.com (http://www.formfonts.com/) in Revit format and so may well be 'converted'.
Wasn't there something about not using 'Current view only' with Imports due to a bug - or has that been fixed /not relevant in this sort of case?
@bowlingbrad and Mr. Spot - that's a clever technique, thanks

I have been disappointed to find a ton of "Revit" content to be nothing more than a single, over-detailed 3D DWG pulled into a Revit Family and visible at all times. Hardly real Revit content in my book.
I think there was a bug where you couldn't put a topo on a site DWG that was imported in the Site View only, but for the most part we ONLY link DWGs by view.
Best,
Gordon
