I don't remember the insert working this way. I insert a block (Block1) into a drawing, however I find a mistake and make the changes to Block1. Now when I re-insert the block and it says "Block1 is already defined..... I pick Yes, then OK. It says Duplicate definitions of block xxx ignored. But yet, I end up with two blocks inserted.
Did it not before just modify the existing block when you needed to re-define the block?
I'm using Map 3D 2008.

if you have a nested block, and redefine the parent block, AutoCAD, for as long as I have been using it, has never redefined the nested block, you must insert the nested block on it's own to get it redefined.

Which is what I'm doing (missing the old days of block=block to redefine the block).
Let me tell you my experiment I did. I drew a square, save it as a drawing. In a new dwg, inserted the square block. Copied the block about 4 times. Now I went back to the square block and made it a circle with the new drawing still open. Saved the circle and exit, now I have the new dwg open with square blocks. Next I Insert > Browse > pick the same block name as the squares that are now circles > Ok > Yes. So now I SHOULD have 5 circles...right? Well I have 4 circles ( the ones I copied) and the original block now says I have 2! So has it always worked this way and I'm just now figuring that out?

maybe I am not understanding, I tried this experiement and it worked as expected, I had 5 circles when I was done. plus the one I was inserting when I clicked a point

No, it sounds like it might work correctly for you. If you inserted a block, copied it four times for a total of 5 objects. Changed the block and re-inserted the block, do you have a total of 5 objects or 6?
Wonder if it's something in MAP?

If I click a point, I would have 6, if i escape out after redefining it, i only have 5

D'oh.... that's got to be it. I've got insert at 0,0 already set. I need to pick Cancel instead of Ok. That make since!
Thanks for talking me through it!!!

Thanks for talking me through it!!!No problem, you will have to click ok to redefine the block, just make sure insert at 0,0 is unchecked first.
