View Full Version : Huge file size?

I'll try and explain this in the easiest way:
I xref a file into my existing file. The existing file increases in size - obviously. But when I detach the xref, the file size stays huge.
So it appears to me that the xref is bringing in some type of objects that are then being left behind when the xref is detached. I can't figure out what these objects could be. Purge and audit does not help.
Any ideas?

Honestly, an xref shouldn't increase the size of your drawing that much so there might be a different problem here.
I would suggest running the non-dialog version of the purge command at the command line (type in "-purge"). Type in "Regapps" and it will purge all registered applications.
Doing a purge "all" will not remove registered applications.
I hope that helps. :)

Sounds like an object enabler issue. When you close down your session of AutoCAD, then reopen your now-huge "existing" drawing, is there anything in the command history that indicates an object enabler is being loaded?

Try what AugiDoggi suggested. I've purged RegApps from drawings sent to me, and there were hundreds of them in the drawing. I've seen the file size cut down by more than half before.

Any ideas?I think you should also check layer filters, depending on the version. I think some of the older versions had issues with layer filters...

Another vote for Augi Doggie's and BrenBren's advice.
Use -PURGE to remove regapps, and the ._FILTERS command to remove named layer filters.

and, yes, the xref will bring both with it - so work on that drawing first.

Everyone beat me to it, -PURGE those RegApps! Try AUDIT's too, you never know what kind of funny errors are bloating the drawing.

at command prompt type isavepercent <enter> set the variable to 0 <enter> then purge and save the drawing. then check the file size.
a little history the variable isavepercent was introduce with autocad r13c3, i had noticed
this when working for another company, after digging in the help file i found the information
i was looking for. the reason i went to look for it, was that at the time all drawings that we did were backed up to floppy disk for each specific job that we worked on. i was constantly make more new disk to move the files to because they were getting larger than
what they were supposed to be. after finding about isavepercent, we informed the two offices and had all cad machines set the variable 0.
