View Full Version : Layer control for walls???

Is there any way to control the individual layers within a wall family? My main problem is an exterior wall with GWB. I need to show the wall continuing past the roof deck for the parapets, but I need the GWB to stop below the roof deck. I realize that I can stack walls, but to me that is a only a work around. Is there any other legitimate solution here?
Thanks,
Kelli

you need to edit your wall family, preview it in section, modify, select the top boundary of the layer you want to extend, then unlock. this will allow you to extend as needed. works on the bottom as well.
one word of caution is that if you want multiple layers to extend, it will only work if the layers are touching (it would not work if you only want to extend the exterior and interior layers).

Watch out though. From what I can see, you can't unlock the upper part of the wall, only the lower part. Am I correct?

You can unlock the upper part or the lower part. I do the upper part when I place ceilings. I can drag the finish material down from the top of the wall. It doesn't need to go all the way to the floor structure above.

Ok, now I get it. I tried moving the upper part while in the wall property.
Thanks for the tip.

OK, now I have to take this one step further. I've made a vertically compound wall with GWB up to a given point and the sheathing to the remaining height of the wall. is there any way to display a break between where the GWB stops and the sheathing starts??
So many questions so little time...

there is no way to do it in the family other then assiging different materials to get a different section cut.

I'm having similar difficulties. Am I correct that you modify the interior layer in the model, not the wall family?
If so, how does one select the interior layer(s) to be moved? I've been banging my head on the desk trying to create a cmu wall with metal stud furring on the interior. I want to stop the furring 6" above the ceilings while the cmu goes to structure above...
I created a wall type with the proper layers, then unlocked the studs and gyp. If I place a test wall I cannot see any way to move/modify the furring layer (the "extension distance" variable I've read of isn't availabel anywhere I can see).
Any further pointers would be appreciated.

Yes, you adjust the height of the layers in the model, not the wall structure. You only unlock the layers in the wall structure.
When you start unlocking layers, you can not adjust the layers at the top of the wall if you attach the wall to the floor/roof. What you can do though is stop the wall at the height above the ceiling, then drag the other layer(s) up to the floor...or vise-versa...stopping the wall at the bottom of the floor and drag the layer(s) down to the height above the ceiling.

OK, apprently I just can't win. I understand everything posted up to this point, even unlocked my layers and adjusted as needed, but now I have 1 wall that is just not cooperating with me. It is a single wall, both top & bottom are detached, I unlocked the layers, but when I select it in section view as I did with the others, it's not giving me the option to adjust the layers. The only difference between this wall and the others is that it is a header wall and starts 10' AFF and goes to the roof deck. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Hi Kelli,
Your wall type has all 3 layers unlocked at the top, so all 3 are moving together. Try unlocking one and see if that fixes it (if you want the GWB to move independently of the structure, then lock the GWB layers and pull up or down the structure layer).
