View Full Version : Turn off structural member magnetism (joist to column)

I have roof framing that is done with the standard Revit structural components. I also have kingposts modeled as structural columns adjacent to several fenestrations. The roof framing in reality will not align with the columns (studpacks) but in the model one of the joists is snapping to the column and going all cattywompus. Any fixes?

Also known in some parts as being "kittywampus".

Can be easily corrected by using the "beat to fit, paint to match" command.

OK, so do any of us actually have an anwer? Christopher, can you just use the align tool to re-align to the correct location, maybe to a reference plane?

Chris - as Structural Engineers our company have used the Structural Components a lot and have also built a lot of families based on the two point selcction options available for structural based families.

We have raised this issue with Autodesk through the support channel and have not had any solution provided.

In general the structural solution is unusable in for all but the simplest of structures (we never get any of these to design).

We have got round this by either building structural models outside Revit and bringing them in a 3D DWG or by creating our own structural components (time consuming)

The structural components need a lot more work and we hope to see improvements in 7.0

Until then I believe there is no work around and you need to create your own families from scratch which reflect your project requirements.

I would also add that the ODBC export for structural based components may not work in certain instances - this has been confirmed by Autodesk and no work-around is currently available. if you use ODBC export be wary of the structural components and perform your own checks on the data.
