I was wondering why I can only rotate/add the families I create in plan view in my project? When I try to rotate the element it says 'Can't rotate element into this position." :(

I believe this is due to constraints built into the family. Try copying the component. Often a duplicate can be rotated.

Thanks for the response Jay!
Unfortunately I wasn't able to rotate the copy of the component. If it's a constraint issue, is there anything in particular I might be able to do while creating the component families to allow them to be rotated or flipped in more than one direction? I know these questions are probably fairly simplistic, but since I'm learning on the fly all help is especially valuable!

If rotation of the element is limited to plan view, it sounds as though the element family is constrained/hosted to the floor. Elements that want/need full rotation might need to be created with a family template that does not have a hosting constraint (generic model?)

there is also an option in the family to always keep vertical. this can afffect 3d rotation.

A similar situation to the one that I am encountering is the model included with Revit, 'Double Angle Connection-Bolt_Weld". That family also cannot be rotated. Is this just something that Revit cannot do?

Depends on how it was made. Most stuff in Revit is based on a plane, and you cannot rotate "out of plane". You may be able to create a new reference plane in your project, and then rehost the family on a new plane to "rotate" it.

Thanks for all the help everyone, but I think this problem may be beyond me :( I tried all of the suggestions listed and none would quite do the trick.
I'll keep working at it and come back here to mention if I find a/the solution.
Again, thanks for the help!

I have a curved mullion family which I want to be able to rotate in section so that I can polar array it as a nested family inside a rooflight family to a curved roof.
1) I have created the mullion as a 'generic model' not floor or wall based etc
2) I have de-selected the 'always vertical' checkbox in Settings -> Family Category and Parameters -> Generic Models.
When I try to rotate in section (or any elevation view) I get the message "Can't rotate element into this position."
Am I missing something or is there an alternative workflow or host family template I should be using.
This is so un-intuiative. Any help much appreciated.

DO a search on reference lines and rotating Nested Families. While it still wont allow you ro "go in to elevation and rotate it," it will let you select the properties of the family and type in an angle to rotate it, and have it rotate about a specified point of your choosing during the family creation...

I'm sorry, but I didn't get it. Are you saying that you can't rotate (in elevation or section) the family you attached or you can't do that one it is nested into the main family?

Apart from moving this family to a new ref. plane and adding a rotation parameter, has anyone figured out how to have the ability to rotate a family in elevation.
I think I am missing something here? I have unchecked the always vertical button, but always get the reply "cannot rotate...."
Anyone.....?

The always vertical button just means, when the work-plane is angled the family is still vertical. As far as i understand
you still have to put your angle Parameter into the Family
