"locking" objects

Is there a way to lock objects while they are visible so that you cannot edit them?

There's the pin option.
If you are using Workset, you can put those elements on a specific workset. Change to a different username (like : lock) and check out that workset. Then go back to your usual one but honestly aside users training ...

Well - you know how those coming from AutoCAD products want it to be like their "former girlfriend" so to speak. There is a Lock for Layers in AutoCAD and they want to have that same feature in Revit.
