When lofting closed polylines i am sometimes getting an error message "The selected entities are not valid" Other polylines created in exactly yhe same way have worked perfectly. Any suggestions?

Try with BOUNDARY command for these entities.

Attached file. The bottom two polylines will loft OK but the top two won't. I found some rogue lines in the polylines and fixed them, and i even tried redrawing the polylines, but neither worksed.
